EMPLOYMENT

Newcastle Equine Centre (NEC) are seeking enthusiastic equine ambulatory veterinarians to join our practice in the heart of beautiful Newcastle, NSW.  Newcastle is a working port city with beautiful beaches, great schools, and great coffee.  It is the gateway to the Hunter Valley which boasts one of the best Thoroughbred breeding areas in Australia as well as a host of eventers, trotters, racehorses, and backyard ponies. Newcastle is only 40min from Hunter Valley wineries and world class restaurants.

NEC is a combination of first opinion, ambulatory and referral practice which a range of ambulatory services as well as in-hospital facilities to manage surgical, paediatric, and emergency medical cases. Currently, our team consists of a range of veterinarians including specialists in surgery and medicine as well as an enthusiastic support staff.  Our case load covers all aspects of equine veterinary practice including dressage, eventing, pony club, polo, racetrack and reproduction. Digital x-ray machines, endoscopy (dynamic and video), high quality ultrasound equipment, laser, in-house laboratory, and dental instruments including a power float are available at our clinic.  All ambulatory vets have an experienced nurse along on all calls and a truck loaded with the equipment required for routine ambulatory work.

The available position is a permanent full-time job and can be adapted to include any areas of interest related to ambulatory practice (with some hospital work).  The work week entails a 4-day work week with a rotation of one night a week on call and 1 weekend on call every 4 weeks on a rotating roster (may vary with the time of year) with plenty of backup support of on-call specialists and nurses.   Salary range is well-above the award and commiserate with the experience of the applicant ranging from $90,000-$120,000 plus superannuation.

The successful applicant will be provided with a fully equipped car, petrol and a phone allowance as well as all registration and professional fees.  Accommodation near the beach (utilities and internet included, may be shared) is also included as part of the salary package for the first (1) year.

Sponsorship for the right candidate is possible but all applicants are required to be eligible for registration by the Veterinary Practitioners Board of New South Wales.  Start time is flexible as positions are available over the next few months as well as going into the equine breeding season starting in July 2024.

Newcastle Equine Centre is growing and as a result we now need a dedicated reception team to assist us in providing excellent customer service.
Newcastle Equine Centre is a combination of ambulatory and surgical referral equine practice which provides routine equine ambulatory work, reproductive services for local stud farms, and hospital management for surgical, paediatric, and emergency medical cases.
The available position is a permanent full-time job encompassing front desk management of all aspects of customer service. This position is specifically an administration support staff role so it would suit someone who is capable with a computer and phone and no desire to nurse.
The Role includes:
– Answering incoming calls with the ability to re-direct calls and take accurate messages.
– Manage emails and client inquiries with friendly tone and helpful attitude.
– Assist with scheduling appointments and organizing the day.
– Invoicing clients and collecting payments including handling of cash, EFTPOS and other payments.
– Providing administrative support to veterinarians and other Administration staff as needed.
– Liaising between clients and the clinical team.
– Requesting results, samples and other documents from third parties.
– Assisting clients with retail sales of over the counter products.
– Keeping the reception area tidy as needed.
To be successful for this job, an applicant should have a minimum of the following:
Essential Criteria:
– At least 2 years reception experience or in a customer service role.
– Friendly, warm personality with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
– Moderate to advanced computer skills with experience in managing a customer database and sending and receiving documents across many formats.
– Enjoy working as part of a team with the ability to work independently when required.
– Great time management and organisational skills with the ability to multi task.
– Be able to adapt and learn quickly with attention to detail and keep calm under pressure.
– Exceptional record keeping skills.
The work week entails a 5-day work week from 9am to 5pm with no after-hours requirements or nursing. Starting salary is above the award at $25-$30 an hour depending on experience plus Superannuation.

Newcastle Equine Centre is a combination of ambulatory and specialty referral practice providing on-farm care and in-hospital facilities to manage surgical, neonatal, as well as emergency and complex medical cases.
The available position is a permanent full-time job as an equine veterinary nurse which has a range of duties including stable work, reception, inventory, surgical, neonatal and medical nursing.
The job entails a 4 day work week with paid after hours and on-call duties on a combine roster along with other nurses. Experience in handling all types of horses, especially racehorses and foals, is required as well as the ability to work hard with maturity and take on responsibilities within the scope of the job. We are seeking an enthusiastic Stablehand/Trainee Equine Veterinary Nurse to join our exclusively equine practice in the heart of beautiful Newcastle, NSW.

All applicants MUST have horse handling experience as well as the ability to work hard with maturity and take on responsibilities within the scope of the job. Applicants must be prepared and enthusiastic to provide the highest possible standard of care to our patients within a busy equine hospital. The successful applicant will be trained in various equine veterinary nursing tasks and responsibilities.
 
Duties include:
• Feeding and watering of horses.
• Cleaning out boxes and stables, compliant with WHS and PPE training and standards.
• Keeping a very high standard of cleanliness and upkeep of the stables, feed room and hospital areas.
• Grooming patients daily
• Assisting veterinarians and nurses in appointments and treatments
• Administrative animal attendant tasks
• Cleaning equipment.
 
The hours are 12pm to 6pm, 5 days a week. The hourly rate is $25 plus superannuation.

INTERNSHIPS

Newcastle Equine Centre has 2 twelve-month internship opportunities available in equine practice starting in January 2025 and July 2025.  This is available for a new graduate or any veterinarian who would like more intensive equine experience. This internship offers the opportunity to experience both general, reproductive and referral equine practice with a team of experienced equine practitioners and specialists in equine surgery, medicine, and reproduction…and live by the beach while doing it!

Our primary practice is located in beautiful Newcastle adjacent to Newcastle Racecourse and five minutes from many of the most beautiful beaches in NSW. We have an interesting and highly varied caseload of both first opinion and referral cases servicing approximately 25% thoroughbred racehorses, 25 % Standardbred pacers, 25% performance/pleasure horses and 25% stud medicine. We operate using state of the art diagnostic equipment including digital radiography units, colour flow doppler ultrasound, video endoscopy, dynamic endoscopy, handheld ECG unit, laser and a fully equipped in-house laboratory.

Applicants should be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals looking to make the most of the diverse learning opportunity. The successful applicants will receive experience in the fields of surgery, anesthesia, internal medicine, lameness, reproduction, laboratory procedures and imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy and dynamic endoscopy) with continuous staff support during 2-week rotations in each department of Medicine, Surgery and Ambulatory/Reproduction. The successful interns will have an internship program tailored to their interests and will include involvement in the diagnosis and treatment of hospital cases as well as general ambulatory work, reproduction, and attendance at trotting meetings. All veterinarians and interns work a 4-day work week. After-hours on-call duties are covered by the team of associate veterinarians, with the secondary back-up being shared between the interns for assistance and night treatments until their skills are established (this is usually a 1 in 2, or 1 in 3 roster).

Applicants must be eligible to work and register as a Veterinary Surgeon in New South Wales. The salary package is in line with the Award and starts at $60,000 AUD plus Superannuation as well as including fully furnished shared accommodation adjacent to the hospital, utilities, Wi-fi, shared work vehicle, phone, four weeks annual leave, and access to local continuing education. And living 5 minutes from the beach while working.
