Internships Available in Equine Practice
It’s that time of year again, Newcastle Equine Centre has 2 x 12-month internship positions available with a July 2023 start date. This is available for an Australian or New Zealand new graduate or any veterinarian currently living in Australia or New Zealand who would like more intensive equine experience. This internship offers the opportunity to experience both general, reproductive and referral equine practice with a team of experienced equine practitioners, a specialist equine surgeon, an equine internal medicine specialist, and a theriogenology specialist.
Our practice is located in beautiful Newcastle adjacent to Newcastle Racecourse and five minutes from many of the most beautiful beaches in NSW. We have an interesting and highly varied caseload of both first opinion and referral cases servicing approximately 25% Thoroughbred racehorses, 25% Standardbred pacers, 25% performance/pleasure horses and 25% stud medicine. We operate using state of the art diagnostic equipment including digital radiography units, colour flow doppler ultrasound, video endoscopy, dynamic endoscopy, hand held ECG unit, laser and a fully equipped in house laboratory.
Applicants should be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals looking to make the most of the learning opportunity. The successful applicants will receive experience in the fields of surgery, anesthesia, medicine, lameness, reproduction, laboratory procedures and imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy and dynamic endoscopy) with continuous senior staff support. The successful interns will have an internship program tailored to their interests and will include involvement in the diagnosis and treatment of hospital cases as well as general ambulatory work, reproduction and attendance at trotting meetings. Afterhours on call duties are covered by the team of associate veterinarians, with the interns sharing a 1-in-3 secondary back-up for assistance and night treatments until their skills are established.
Applicants must be eligible to work and register as a Veterinary Surgeon in New South Wales and must already be residing in Australia or New Zealand as it is difficult to get overseas applicants into the country due to travel restrictions. The salary package is in line with the Award and starts at $60,000 AUD plus Superannuation as well as including fully furnished shared accommodation adjacent to the hospital, utilities, shared work vehicle, phone, four weeks annual leave, four-day work week and access to local continuing education.
