Newcastle Equine Centre hires interns each January and July. There are between 1-2 positions available depending on the previous cohort and time of year. Please email the contact info below to enquire when the next openings will be available if you are interested in an internship with us.

These internships are available for a new graduate or any veterinarian who would like more intensive equine experience. This internship offers the opportunity to experience both general, reproductive and referral equine practice with a team of experienced equine practitioners and specialists in equine surgery, medicine, and reproduction…and live by the beach while doing it!

Our primary practice is located in beautiful Newcastle adjacent to Newcastle Racecourse and five minutes from many of the most beautiful beaches in NSW. We have an interesting and highly varied caseload of both first opinion and referral cases servicing approximately 25% thoroughbred racehorses, 25 % Standardbred pacers, 25% performance/pleasure horses and 25% stud medicine. We operate using state of the art diagnostic equipment including digital radiography units, colour flow doppler ultrasound, video endoscopy, dynamic endoscopy, handheld ECG unit, laser and a fully equipped in-house laboratory.

Applicants should be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals looking to make the most of the diverse learning opportunity. The successful applicants will receive experience in the fields of surgery, anesthesia, internal medicine, lameness, reproduction, laboratory procedures and imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy and dynamic endoscopy) with continuous staff support during 2-week rotations in each department of Medicine, Surgery and Ambulatory/Reproduction. The successful interns will have an internship program tailored to their interests and will include involvement in the diagnosis and treatment of hospital cases as well as general ambulatory work, reproduction, and attendance at trotting meetings. All veterinarians and interns work a 4-day work week. After-hours on-call duties are covered by the team of associate veterinarians, with the secondary back-up being shared between the interns for assistance and night treatments until their skills are established (this is usually a 1 in 2, or 1 in 3 roster).

Applicants must be eligible to work and register as a Veterinary Surgeon in New South Wales. The salary package is in line with the Award and starts at $60,000 AUD plus Superannuation as well as including fully furnished shared accommodation adjacent to the hospital, utilities, Wi-fi, shared work vehicle, phone, four weeks annual leave, and access to local continuing education. And living 5 minutes from the beach while working.

All enquiries should be directed to lisanne.gallant@newcastleequine.com.au or call (02) 4927 6135. Applications should include; a letter of intent, curriculum vitae and two letters of reference to Dr Lisanne Gallant.

Applications are open until the positions are filled.
